Why Thunderbolts feels different From Past MCU Films
In this Marvel Thunderbolts review we dive into what makes it such a surprise and a stand out in post endgame MCU . Coming with no expectations, Thunderbolts proved to be a return to form for marvel It is a film with a purpose- has something to say and knows exactly what it wants to be. Just the benefit of having competent creative crew who have a steady vision , without the uncertainties of script and numerous reshoots
POSITIVES
- Right Vision and Purpose : The film’s strongest suit is in its intent and the message it has to say ,which is very relevant for the world we live in today. It is not just another marvel movie and has a purpose. It is all about the power of human empathy and how uplfting others can help fill the “void” within them.
- Mental health : The Mental health aspect is handled sincerely and realism without over-glorifying or over-simplifying. The authenticity with which struggles with depression and loneliness is represented resonated a lot with the audiences
- Forgotten and less known characters get the spotlight they deserved. Yelena, John Walker, Ghost and Red Guardian embark upon the path of redemption and rediscover how to be a hero again in their own ways. It is quiet character driven storytelling which hits hard
- The most important aspect they got right was getting the right director and creative team behind the movie. Director Jake Schreier brought his distinct tone and vision to the movie The clarity in plan is very evident with the lack of large scale reshoots .
- The cinematography and practical effects: the distinct color grading gives it a different look than other MCU movies and makes it aesthetically pleasing too. The action scenes are fewer but they pack a punch thanks to the practical approach over heavy CGI , taking us back to the classic, grittier style of action in the early MCU days
Character work
In this Marvel Thunderbolts Review we also highlight the characters which shined and those which fell short
- Yelena and Bob the highlights
- Yelena emerges as the heart of Thunderbolts carrying most of the emotional weight along with Bob. One of the better written characters in the MCU post-endgame, she feels very real haunted by her past and burdened by loneliness, often masking it with her dry humor. She has become a fan favorite after thunderbolts. Her relation with her mostly absent dad Alexei is bittersweet culminating in one of the most moving moments: The emotional scene with him telling Yelena why she is special. It is genuinely heartfelt and will be remembered by fans
- The breakthrough performance is given by Lewis Pullman as Bob aka Sentry/Void. His vulnerable and nuanced portayal of a person going through extreme mood shifts brings real depth to his character. The unexpected bond formed between him and yelena becomes the soul of the film. Showing how just kindness and empathy can be the most heroic act, captured beautifully by the heartwarming “hug of friendship” defeating the literal and figurative void in Bob

NEGATIVES
- While the mental health theme is handled well most of the time can definitely feel a little heavy handed and preachy at times. Moreover a mature and sensitive theme like this surely isnt everyone’s cup of tea and specially for those fans who only look for traditional superhero formula. The lack of action in the climax and a more psychological approach made it divisive among such fans
- Films with multiple co-leads often end up a bit short of time and some characters feel under-developed as per their full potential. That felt like the case with John Walker and The Ghost. They do a good job of redefining them as characters and their journeys but little more time spent on the conclusion of their arcs would have lead to an even more impactful ending.
- While it got critical acclaim and was liked a lot by fans, it struggled at the box office. The multiple co-leads from different projects on disney plus shows and older movies dragged the movie down as casual fans had little interest in them.
FINAL VERDICT: In this Marvel Thunderbolts Review, Thunderbolts feels like a welcome return to the grounded storytelling of early MCU days, with a distinct vision and tone which felt like a breath of fresh air. The character focused narrative made the stakes feel more personal, fostering a deeper emotional connection with the characters. Even though it falls short of its full potential the very relevant message and heartwarming theme leaves us with a smile and some tears, with a reminder that none of us are truly
